SoCal Derby is San Diego’s Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) league.
Do I have to be a seasoned skater to join SoCal?
Being a great skater helps, but if you’re not, we’ll teach you. We will assess your skating skills and help you realize your potential as an athlete and member of the league. Throughout your initial practices and tryout period we will get to know both your skating style and your awesome personality!
How can I get ready for roller derby?
First off, get to know us! Check out a practice to gain an understanding of what’s involved. Go to the WFTDA website and get to know the rules of the game. Sign up for our newsletter to find out when and where we will be. Then skate, skate, and skate some more!
How do I get started?
We do a new skater orientation on the 3rd Monday of every month. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org for details and directions.
BUT WHAT IS DERBY?
What skating skills will I need to master to be eligible for the team?
SoCal Derby requires that skaters master the WFTDA Minimum Skills to be eligible to be on our chartered team.
What will I need to join?
You are responsible for having your own skates and safety equipment. We highly recommend our sponsor, Sin City Skates, for all of your gear.
Please bring a signed version of the WFTDA Waiver to your first practice.
Skaters are required to have both medical insurance and WFTDA insurance to participate. We’ll help you walk through the process.
How much of a time commitment is required to be a SoCal Derby skater?
Roller derby is a big commitment of time and energy. You’ll be expected to attend weekly league practices, which are two hours, three times a week. In addition to practices, everyone is works at bouts and other official events and fundraisers. We are a skater run organization, so we also require you to work on a committee and attend meetings to remain an active member. If the time commitment is too much, there are many other ways to get involved, including becomeing a part of our officiating crew! Roller derby becomes a passion for all who get involved and any skater will tell you that it is completely worth it!
Will I get injured?
Just like football, roller derby is a FULL CONTACT sport. Injuries can happen BUT we work really hard to prevent as many injuries as possible through endurance and strength training. As mentioned above, full protective gear is required for all skaters (and refs!) and we follow that rule strictly. In addition to your primary health insurance every skater (and ref!) is covered under a roller sports insurance policy. This supplemental insurance is affordable and is required. Be advised that bumps, bruises and some aches and pains are an expected after-effect of some really intense workouts. It helps to keep some ice packs, ibuprofen and epsom salts on hand!
If I have more questions, who do I ask?
Please feel free to email us at email@example.com
Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you on the track!
